The classifying space for commutativity of geometric orientable 3-manifold groups

From MaRDI portal

Let \(G\) be a group. One can identify the set of homomorphisms \(\Hom(\mathbb{Z}^{n},G)\) with the subset of commuting \(n\)-tuples in \(G^{n}\). On the other hand, this space of commuting tuples forms a simplicial subspace of the usual simplicial model construction of the classifying space \(BG\). Denote this subspace as \(B_{\mathrm{com}}(G)\). It has been shown that \(B_{\mathrm{com}}(G)\) is the classifying space of \textit{transitionally commutative} principal \(G\)-bundles and it has a universal space for transitionally commutative \(G\)-bundles denoted by \(E_{\mathrm{com}}(G)\). There have been many results relating homotopy properties of \(E_{\mathrm{com}}(G)\) to how far is \(G\) from being commutative. In this work the authors describe the homotopy type of \(E_{\mathrm{com}}(G)\) when \(G\) is the fundamental group of an orientable geometric 3-manifold. \textbf{Theorem.} Let \(G\) be the fundamental group of an orientable geometric 3-manifold. Then, \(E_{\mathrm{com}}(G)\) is homotopically equivalent to a wedge \(\vee_{I}S^{1}\), with \(I\) a (possibly empty) countable index. The following holds: (1) \(I\) is empty if and only if \(G\) is abelian, in this case \(E_{\mathrm{com}}(G)\) is contractible. (2) \(I\) is infinite if and only if \(G\) is infinite and nonabelian.\N\NThe proof is by using that \(E_{\mathrm{com}}(G)\) is homotopically equivalent to certain posets of cosets of abelian subgroups of \(G\). Then, by Thurston's geometrization theorem, the authors analyze case by case the possibilities for these posets in such a \(G\).
