The closure ordering conjecture on local Arthur packets of classical groups
Let \(F\) denote a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic zero, and let \(G_n\) stand for \(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}\) or split \(\mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}\) over \(F\). Let \(\Pi_A(G_n)\) denote the set of representations of \(G_n\) of Arthur type. For a local Arthur parameter \(\psi\) we denote corresponding local Arthur packet by \(\Pi_{\psi}\), and for an irreducible admissible representation \(\pi\) of \(G_n\) we let \(\Psi(\pi)\) denote the set \(\{ \psi : \pi \in \Pi_\psi \}\).\N\NThe first main result in the paper under the review states that, for \(\pi \in \Pi_A(G_n)\) and any \(\psi \in \Psi(\pi)\), for corresponding local \(L\)-parameters we have \N\[\N\phi_\pi \geq_C \phi_{\psi^{\max}(\pi)} \geq_C \phi_\psi \geq_C \phi_{\psi^{\min}(\pi)}.\N\]\NHere \(\psi^{\max}(\pi)\) denotes the most tempered local Arthur parameter in \(\Psi(\pi)\), \(\psi^{\min}(\pi)\) denotes the least tempered local Arthur parameter in \(\Psi(\pi)\), and \(\geq_C\) is the closure ordering defined on the Vogan variety. In particular, the closure ordering conjecture [\textit{B. Xu}, Int. Math. Res. Not. 2024, No. 13, 10349--10409 (2024; Zbl 1564.11054)] holds for \(G_n\). a refinement of this conjecture is also proposed for a general connected reductive group.\N\NAs an application, the authors prove that the closure ordering conjecture implies the converse direction of the enhanced Shahidi conjecture, under certain assumptions, i.e., for a quasi-split connected reductive \(G\) over \(F\), \(\psi \in \Psi(G)\) such that \(\Pi_\psi\) contains a generic representation, it is proved that \(\psi\) is tempered. Assumptions used in the proof are verified in the case \(G = G_n\).\N\NFinally, it is shown that for \(\psi_1, \psi_2 \in \Psi(G_n)\) such that \(\Pi_{\psi_1} \subseteq \Pi_{\psi_2}\) we have \(\psi_1 = \psi_2\), in contrast to the situation over Archimedean local fields.
