The minimal model program for arithmetic surfaces enriched by a Brauer class
In the article under review, by \textit{arithmetic surface} the authors mean a normal separated integral two dimensional excellent scheme which is quasi-projective over a noetherian affine scheme and which has finite residue fields.\N\NIn this context, for each such arithmetic surface \(X\) the authors' aim is to formulate and study a minimal model program for orders on \(X\). In this regard, for the case Brauer classes with prime index \(p>5\), the authors establish analogues of terminal resolution, Castelnuovo contraction and Zariski factorization.\N\NFurther, the authors obtain structural results for a class of terminal singularities and Castelnuovo contractions which exhibit phenomena that do not arise in the classical context of minimal model program for orders on complex projective surfaces.\N\NThe results and viewpoint of the current article build on the authors' earlier work \textit{D. Chan} and \textit{C. Ingalls} [Invent. Math. 161, No. 2, 427--452 (2005; Zbl 1078.14005)], which in turn builds on the work of \textit{M. Artin} and \textit{D. Mumford} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 25, 75--95 (1972; Zbl 0244.14017)]. A key novel concept which arises in the present work is the authors' notion of \textit{secondary ramification} for Brauer classes on arithmetic surfaces.
