The modular isomorphism problem over all fields

From MaRDI portal

Let \(G\) and \(H\) be two finite \(p\)-groups. In the paper under review, the authors consider the modular isomorphism problem (MIP) for a field \(F\) of characteristic \(p\), asking whether an \(F\)-algebra isomorphism \(FG\cong FH\) forces \(G\cong H\). The first part surveys results available in this formulation: Theorem~2.1 collects several families for which MIP has a positive answer over all fields and highlights that most of these results concern \(2\)-groups. The paper also summarizes a set of \(F\)-invariants extracted from the augmentation ideal, including the isomorphism types of \(G/G'\) and \(Z(G)\) and successive quotients of the dimension subgroups and it uses the transfer lemma (Theorem 2.3) as a mechanism to transport information attached to suitable normal subgroups under an algebra isomorphism.\N\NA further section discusses why several techniques behave differently over prime fields and general coefficient fields and it raises Question 2.10 asking whether MIP over all fields holds for groups with trivial third dimension subgroup. Example 2.11 illustrates the dependence on the coefficient field by comparing \(\Delta(FD_8)/\Delta^3(FD_8)\) and \(\Delta(FQ_8)/\Delta^3(FQ_8)\), which are non-isomorphic when \(F=\mathbb{F}_2\) but become isomorphic when \(F=\mathbb{F}_4\). The last part generalizes positive answers previously proved over prime fields to all fields: Theorem~3.6 treats finite metacyclic \(p\)-groups, Theorem 3.8 pinpoints the only possible non-isomorphic case among \(3\)-groups of maximal class with isomorphic group algebras and Theorem 3.9 proves MIP for two-generated finite \(p\)-groups of nilpotency class two.
