The non-linear regime of gravity

From MaRDI portal

In an early period of research in General Relativity, it made sense mainly to assume linearized Einstein equations or to consider linear perturbations of special solutions of Einstein's equations. It was initially used for weak fields, which helped highlight differences from Newtonian gravity. But non-linearity is a key feature of Einstein's equations. Particularly, at that time exact solutions of these equations and a remarkable understanding on local and global aspects of geometry brought some insight into physical consequences of this non-linearity. Of course, any progress is highly welcome in this field. The author looks towards the future and sees ``the dynamical/highly non-linear as the new frontier in gravity where exciting results could be awaited. To found his prognose he gives examples concerning I. Cosmology, II. Non-linear behavior of black holes and the ultimate state conjecture, III. Energy transfer, weak turbulent and long-term behavior of key systems.
