The operad of Latin hypercubes

From MaRDI portal

Let \(\mathcal{C}\) be a category with finite products, \(X\) an object in \(\mathcal{C}\), and \(d\) be a positive integer. A Latin hypercube of dimension \(d\) over \(X\) is a morphism \(\lambda:L\rightarrow X^{d+1}\) in \(\mathcal{C}\) such that\N\[\N\tau_{s}^{d+1}\circ\lambda:L\rightarrow X^{d}\N\]\Nis an isomorphism in \(\mathcal{C}\) for 1\(\leq s\leq d+1\), where \(\tau _{s}^{d+1}\) is the projection from \(X^{d+1}\) to \(X^{d}\) discarding the coordinate \ in \(X^{d+1}\).\N\NThe synopsis of the paper goes as follows:\N\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[\S 2] establishes the following theorem, whose proof is elementary.\N\NTheorem. Let \(X\) be a non-empty set. There is a sub-operad \(\mathcal{L}\) of the endomorphism operad \(\mathcal{E}\) of \(X\) such that\N\[\N\mathcal{L}(d) =\mathcal{L}(X^{d},X)\N\]\Nfor all \(d\in\mathbb{N}\).\N\N\item[\S 3] gives a generalization of the above theorem to categories with finite products (Theorem 3.4).\N\N\item[\S 4] gives a further generalization of the above theorem to certain Cartesian closed monoidal categories in which \ can be identified with a sub-operad of an internal endomorphism operad (Theorem 4.5).\N\N\item[\S 5] describes Latin hypercubes in terms of pullback diagrams, giving further remarks.\N\end{itemize}
