The tripleableness theorem

From MaRDI portal

About 1965, it was urgent to decide how to characterize the category of algebras over a monad. \textit{F. E. J. Linton} [Proc. Conf. Categor. Algebra 1965, 84--94 (1966; Zbl 0201.35003)] treated the case for monads in Set, and then Beck established his theorem characterizing algebras in general. Beck's idea was exhibited in full detail by Mac Lane's pioneering book on category theory [\textit{S. Mac Lane}, Categories for the working mathematician. New York etc.: Springer-Verlag (1971; Zbl 0232.18001), Chapter VI, \S 7], but Beck himself only presented the idea in a conference in 1966 without publishing it. His idea is finally published in the TAC reprint series thanks to Nathanael Arkov's great effort inclusive of typing it up in \LaTeX.
