The width of embedded circles

From MaRDI portal

The authors develop a Morse-Lusternik-Schnirelmann theory for the distance between two points of a smoothly embedded circle in a complete Riemannian manifold, and introduce a definition of width that generalises the classical definition for plane curves. Also, they investigate properties and characterisations of curves that can be regarded as the Riemannian analogues of plane curves of constant width. \N\NThe paper is organized into eight sections dealing with the following aspects: introduction; basic properties of regular and critical points; the basic min-max theorem; the width of the boundary of discs; width, diameter and length; involutive symmetry; comparison between min-max quantities; examples. Other first two authors' paper directly connected to this topic is [J. Differ. Geom. 126, No. 3, 875--907 (2024; Zbl 1573.53082)], and of the second author and \textit{S. Donato} is [J. Geom. Anal. 34, No. 2, Paper No. 60, 28 p. (2024; Zbl 1530.58010)].
