Time delay for the Dirac equation

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We consider time delay for the Dirac equation. A new method to calculate the asymptotics of the expectation values of the operator intlimits0inftyeiH0tzetaleft(fracleftvertxightvertRight)e−iH0tdt, as Rightarrowinfty, is presented. Here H0 is the free Dirac operator and zetaleft(tight) is such that zetaleft(tight)=1 for 0leqtleq1 and zetaleft(tight)=0 for t>1. This approach allows us to obtain the time delay operator deltamathcalTleft(fight) for initial states f in mathcalH23/2+varepsilonleft(mathbbR3;mathbbC4ight), varepsilon>0, the Sobolev space of order 3/2+varepsilon and weight 2. The relation between the time delay operator deltamathcalTleft(fight) and the Eisenbud-Wigner time delay operator is given. Also, the relation between the averaged time delay and the spectral shift function is presented.

The authors define time delay for the quantum scattering pair of Dirac operators \(\{H_0,H\}\), where \(H_0\) is called free Dirac operator and is related to the mass of particles and a \(4\times 4\) Hermitian matrices. Also, the operator \(H_0\) is a self-adjoint operator on \(L^2\). The second operator \(H\) is the perturbed Dirac operator and it is defined by means of a potential V which is an Hermitian \(4\times 4\) matrix valued function defined on \(\mathbb R^3\) such that \(H\) is a self-adjoint operator on \(L^2\). It may be noted that the relation of the time delay operator and the Eisenbud-Wigner time delay operator is given, by using a direct method and this can be applied to other equations in quantum scattering theory, such as, for example, the Schrodinger operator, the Klein-Gordon equation or the Pauli operator.
