Translation length formula for two-generated groups acting on trees

From MaRDI portal

The paper gives a combinatorial formula for translation length functions of two-generated groups acting by isometries on \( \Lambda\)-trees, where \(\Lambda\) is a totally ordered nontrivial abelian group. In terms of pseudo-lengths, the main result says that if \(a,b\) satisfy \(\|a\|>0\), \(\|b\|>0\), and \(|\|a\|-\|b\||<\min\{\|ab\|,\|ab^{-1}\|\}\), then for every cyclically reduced word \(w=x_1\cdots x_n\), with \(x_i\in\{a,b,a^{-1},b^{-1}\}\) and \(n\geq 1\),\N\[\N2\|w\|=\sum_{i=1}^{n-1}\|x_ix_{i+1}\|+\|x_nx_1\|>0.\N\]\NThe paper also proves that, under explicit conditions on \(\alpha,\beta,\gamma,\delta\in\Lambda\), there is a unique pseudo-length on \(F(a,b)\) taking the values \(\alpha,\beta,\gamma,\delta\) on \(a,b,ab,ab^{-1}\), respectively. The final section applies these results to properly discontinuous actions and discrete free subgroups of isometries. It also gives an algorithmic approach to purely hyperbolic real-valued pseudo-lengths on \(F(a,b)\) and formulates a conjecture on \(\Aut(F_2)\)-orbits.
