Unbiased stereological estimation of the surface area of gradient surface processes

From MaRDI portal

Stationarity is a common and widely accepted assumption in stochastic geometry. However, in some applications this assumption cannot be justified. In this article the authors focus on spatial surface processes with a gradient, where the statistical properties may change along a given direction, which can be chosen as the \(z\)-axis. Then the distributional characteristics of the process, as the the specific surface intensity \(S_V\) for instance, do depend on \(z\) as well. The authors propose an unbiased stereological estimator of \(S_V(z)\) which is based on planar sections parallel to the vertical direction. Mathematically, the estimator is justified by an explicit relationship between the appropriate characteristics of the fibre process resulting from the vertical section and the characteristics of the original process. The paper does also contain a discussion of the variance of a slightly modified version of the original estimator.
