Uniformly semi-rational simple groups
An element \(x\) in a finite group \(G\) is called semi-rational if every generator of \(\langle x \rangle\) is conjugate either to \(x\) or to some power \(x^{r_x}\). The group \(G\) is uniformly semi-rational if there exists a fixed integer \(r\) such that every element \(x \in G\) is \(r\)-semi-rational, meaning all generators of \(\langle x \rangle\) are conjugate to \(x\) or \(x^r\) with the same \(r\) for all elements. For \(r=1\), namely for rational groups, see the seminal paper by \textit{W.~Feit} and \textit{G.~M.~Seitz} [Ill. J. Math. 33, No. 1, 103--131 (1989; Zbl 0701.20005)].\N\NThe paper classifies uniformly semi-rational non-abelian simple groups, with particular focus on alternating groups. Theorem A establishes that the alternating group \(A_n\) is uniformly semi-rational if and only if \(n < 23\) and \(n \notin \{16, 21\}\). The proof relies on analyzing when conjugacy classes split in \(A_n\) using partitions with distinct odd parts and introduces the concept of rational partitions where the product of parts is a square. A key tool is Theorem B, which characterizes integers that can be expressed as sums of pairwise distinct odd positive integers whose product is a square.\N\NTheorem C shows that every non-alternating semi-rational simple group is uniformly semi-rational, completing the classification. Tables provide explicit values of the semi-rationality parameter \(r\) for each uniformly semi-rational simple group.
