Unitarily invariant trace extensions beyond the trace class
Let \({\mathcal J}\) be a (two-sided) ideal in \({\mathcal B}(H)\), the ring of all bounded linear operators on a (separable, infinite-dimensional) Hilbert space \(H\). A unitarily invariant trace on \({\mathcal J}\) is a linear functional on \({\mathcal J}\) such that \(\tau(T)= \tau(U^* TU)\) for all \(T\in{\mathcal J}\) and all unitary operators \(U\in{\mathcal B}(H)\). The usual trace on the Schatten class \({\mathcal C}_1\) is unitarily invariant and extends the standard trace on \({\mathcal F}(H)\), the finite rank operators in \({\mathcal B}(H)\). Let \({\mathcal J}_{o(1/n)}\) be the collection of all operators \(T\in{\mathcal B}(H)\) whose singular numbers \(s_n(T)\) satisfy \(s_n(T)= o(1/n)\). This is an ideal in \({\mathcal B}(H)\) which contains \({\mathcal C}_1\) as a proper subset. The main result states that \({\mathcal J}_{o(1/n)}\) admits unitarily invariant trace extensions of the standard trace on \({\mathcal F}(H)\). For the entire collection see [Zbl 0927.00026].
