Using SPSS for Windows. Data analysis and graphics
This book is a self-teaching guide for using SPSS for Windows, version 8.0 and beyond (although many of the procedures are applicable also to earlier versions of the SPSS package). This textbook helps the beginning student to learn analyzing the statistical data with SPSS without outside assistance; the numerous examples enclosed illustrate the use of the SPSS package, the results of the SPSS application are shown and discussed, and each chapter demonstrates statistical procedures and provides exercises that reinforce the text examples. This book may be used basically in two ways: (a) as a stand-alone manual for a student to learn using the SPSS for Windows; and (b) as a computer-aided application generator and course support to some basic texts in statistics. Assuming that the reader is familiar with some basic ideas on quantitative data and statistical analysis, the book provides concrete and valuable experience with actual data sets and illustrates the results of each type of analysis on examples taken from various fields of statistical applications. The book is made up of 16 chapters divided into 5 main parts, with an Appendix on data file formats used in the manual. The titles of the enclosed chapters are as follows: Part 1 (Introduction): Ch. 1, The nature of SPSS. Part 2 (Descriptive statistics): Ch. 2, Organization of data; Ch. 3, Measures of location; Ch. 4, Measures of variability; Ch. 5, Association between numerical variables; Ch. 6, Association of categorical variables. Part 3 (Probability): Ch. 7, Basic ideas of probability; Ch. 8, Probability distributions; Ch. 9, Sampling distributions. Part 4 (Statistical inference): Ch. 10, Using a sample to estimate characteristics of one population; Ch. 11, Answering questions about population characteristics; Ch. 12, Difference between two populations; Ch. 13, variability in one population and in two populations. Part 5 (Statistical methods for other problems): Ch. 14, Inference on categorical data; Ch. 15, Regression analysis; Ch. 16, Comparison of several populations. Appendix (Data files).
