Viewing the efficiency of chaos control
This paper compares two methods from Chaos Control, namely the OGY [\textit{E. Ott, C. Grebogi} and \textit{J. A. Yorke}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, No. 11, 1196--1199 (1990; Zbl 0964.37501)] and the Zero-spectral-radius method. Both methods take advantage of the topological transitivity of chaotic dynamical systems. Roughly speaking, one waits until the system trajectory reaches a neighborhood of the unstable equilibrium or periodic orbit to be stabilized and then uses linear control techniques. While in the OGY-method only the unstable eigenvalues of the Jacobian are required to be zero, in the Zero-spectral-radius method this is required for all eigenvalues. In this paper these methods are first described and then compared for several examples, including the 2d Hénon map, a 3d Hénon-like map and the logistic map. In particular, the domains of attraction are investigated and a new procedure for deriving the necessary control formulas is discussed.
