Weak Harnack inequalities for nonlocal double phase problems

From MaRDI portal

The authors investigate weak Harnack inequalities for minimizers of nonlocal double phase functionals of the type\N\[\N\mathcal{F}(u;\Omega) = \iint_{\mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n} \left( \frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^p}{|x-y|^{n+sp}} + a(x,y)\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^q}{|x-y|^{n+tq}} \right) \,dx\,dy,\N\]\Nwhere \(0<s,t<1\), \(1<p\le q<\infty\), and \(a(x,y)\ge 0\) is a measurable symmetric modulating coefficient. The model exhibits non-uniform ellipticity and switches between two fractional phases depending on the behavior of \(a(x,y)\).\N\NUnder suitable balance conditions between the exponents \(p,q\) and the differentiability orders \(s,t\), as well as Hölder or boundedness assumptions on \(a(\cdot,\cdot)\), the paper establishes several weak Harnack inequalities for locally bounded minimizers. The approach is based on a nonlocal Caccioppoli-type inequality and an expansion of positivity argument, avoiding Moser iteration and delicate logarithmic estimates commonly used in the fractional \(p\)-Laplace setting.\N\NThe results include:\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[(i)] a weak Harnack inequality with explicit dependence on nonlocal tail terms;\N\item[(ii)] refined versions with sharp exponents \(p-1\) and \(q-1\);\N\item[(iii)] a strongly nonlocal estimate when the coefficient admits a positive lower bound;\N\item[(iv)] local boundedness and supremum estimates for minimizers under natural growth assumptions.\N\end{itemize}\NThe analysis carefully balances the interaction between the degenerate \(p\)-phase and the modulated \(q\)-phase, extending the regularity theory for nonlocal problems with nonstandard growth. This paper contributes to the developing regularity theory for nonlocal variational problems with double phase structure, complementing and extending known results for both fractional \(p\)-Laplace equations and local double phase functionals.
