Weakly compact composition operators between algebras of bounded analytic functions

From MaRDI portal

Let \(E, F\) be complex Banach spaces, and let \(\phi:B_E\to B_F\) be an analytic mapping between their open unit balls. The authors give conditions for a composition operator \(C_\phi:H^\infty(B_F)\to H^\infty(B_E): C_\phi(f)=f\circ\phi\) to be weakly compact, or completely continuous, provided \(F\) possesses the approximation property. They utilize these conditions to construct weakly compact composition operators of type \(C_\phi\) that are not compact. Typical sample results: {Theorem}: A composition operator \(C_\phi:H^\infty(B_F)\to H^\infty(B_E)\) is weakly compact if (i) \(\phi(B_E)\subset rB_F\) for some \(r: 0<r<1\), and (ii) \(\phi(B_E)\) is relatively compact in \(F\) equipped by the topology \(\sigma(F,P(F))\) generated by the set \(P(E)\) of all continuous polynomials on \(E\). The converse holds as well if \(F\) has the approximation property. {Corollaries}: If \(F\) is a \(\Lambda\)-space with the approximation property, then every weakly compact composition operator \(C_\phi:H^\infty(B_F)\to H^\infty(B_E)\) is compact; If the Dunford-Pettis property and the approximation property hold on \(F\), then every weakly compact composition operator \(C_\phi:H^\infty(B_F)\to H^\infty(B_E)\) is completely continuous.
