Weighted essentially non-oscillatory Shepard method
This interesting paper deals with a weighted essentially non-oscillatory Shepard method. Consider the problem of interpolating or approximating scattered data in many dimensions. The Shepared algorithm is a fast algorithm used for this purpose whereby it constructs an approximation of a continuous function by assigning weights (typically radial and strictly positive) to data points that are inversely proportional to the distance from the interpolation point. The basic idea is that points closer to the interpolation point contrubute more while points further away contribute less. The weight can be extended to other functions such as inverse multiquadric, Gaussian, Wedland functions and Matern, weights which can have compact or global support and which form a partition of unity to ensure the interpolation's accuracy and stability relaxed to a condition of rapid decay as the distance goes to infinity. Shepard's method has many applications for example to any applications in fields that require interpolation or approximation of data from irregularly spaced data sites to generate continuous surfaces. Approximating piecewise smooth functions in \(\mathbb R^n\) near discontinuities along a hypersurface in \(\mathbb R ^{n-1}\) is challenging for the Shepard's method or any other linear technique for sparse data due to the difficulty in accurately capturing sharp transitions. This article is devoted to constructing a non-linear Shepard's method using the basic ideas that arise from the weighted essentially non-oscillatory interpolation method to deal with these challenges. \N\NThe paper is well written with a good set of references.
