Review text

A new description of Abelian codes is given by means of a trace function. Using this description the author generalizes two results due to Baumert, McEliece, and Niederreiter on the estimation of weights of cyclic codes. To arrive at the estimates the author uses Gauss sums and Eisenstein sums.
