Zur Theorie der Matrices.
Zunächst werden bekannte Sätze aus der Theorie der Matrizen und ihrer charakteristischen Gleichung \(f(\varrho)=0\) auf neue, einfache Weise hergeleitet, insbesondere ein neuer Beweis für die Realität der Wurzeln der Säkulargleichung gegeben. Für die Beurteilung des gleichzeitigen Verschwindens der Unterdeterminanten von \(f(\varrho)\) ist von Wichtigkeit die Kenntnis der Resultante von \(f(\varrho)\) und ihrer Monoren \(g_{ik}\). Der Verf. zeigt, daß\ diese Resultante in zwei Faktoren zerfällt, deren erster nur von \(i\), deren zweiter nur von \(k\) abhängt: \(R(f,g_{ik})=(-1)^{\frac{n(n-1)}{2}}P_{i}Q_{k}\). Dabei sind die \(P_{i}\), \(Q_{k}\) irreduzible Funktionen der Matrizenelemente \(a_{rs}\). Für die Berechnung der Wurzeln der charakteristischen Gleichung wird ein Verfahren mitgeteilt, das ganz analog der Näherungsmethode von \textit{Gräffe} ist. Dabei ergibt sich der Satz: Wenn alle \(a_{ik}\) reell und positiv sind, so hat die charakteristische Gleichung eine einfache positive Wurzel, die alle deren Wurzeln an absolutem Betrag übertrifft.
