    The Hilbert-Carleman determinant associated with a linear integral operator can be defined even if the kernel is not continuous on the diagonal (by putting zeros on the diagonal in the Fredholm definition). For Hilbert-Schmidt operators, a spectral representation is available, which provides a way of extending this concept for certain algebras of operators on Banach spaces, by continuous extension from the finite rank operators. The authors characterize the algebras for which such extensions exist, describe the main properties of the determinants obtained, derive Cramer's rule and formulas for the resolvent in terms of the extended traces of iterations and determinants.
