The paper studies properties of subspaces or (Banach) subalgebras of the algebra \(C_b(X)\) of all continuous bounded maps from a completely regular topological space \(X\) to the algebra \(\mathbb R\) of real numbers. The properties are connected with the Stone-Čech compactification and with the set \(C_0^{\sigma}(X)\) of all bounded continuous maps \(f:X\to{\mathbb R}\) such that \(\mid f^{-1}\mid((\epsilon, \infty))\) is \(\sigma\)-compact for all \(\epsilon>0\). The main result provides some sufficient conditions for a Banach subalgebra of \(C_b(X)\) to be isomorphic to \(C_0^{\sigma}(Y)\) for some locally compact topological space \(Y\). The paper is also equipped with an open question asking whether the existence of an isomorphism between the spaces \(C_0^{\sigma}(X)\) and \(c_0^{\sigma}(Y)\) does imply that the locally compact spaces \(X\) and \(Y\) are homeomorphic.
