The problem studied by the author can be summarised as follows. Let \(\Delta\) be the discrete Laplace operator on \(\mathbb{Z}^ 3\), let \(\Gamma\) be a sublattice of the form \(a_ 1 \mathbb{Z} \oplus a_ 2 \mathbb{Z} \oplus a_ 3 \mathbb{Z}\), where the \(a_ i\) are greater than or equal to 2 and relatively prime. Let \(V\) be a complex-valued function on \(\mathbb{Z}^ 3\) periodic in \(\Gamma\). Consider the discrete eigenvalue problem \((-\Delta + V) \psi = \lambda \psi\), \(\lambda \in \mathbb{C}\), with boundary conditions \(\psi(m + a_ 1, n, p) = \xi_ 1 \psi(m, n, p)\), and similarly for the second and third coordinates. Here \(\xi_ i \in \mathbb{C}^*\). The variety \(F_ \lambda (V) = \{(\xi_ 1, \xi_ 2, \xi_ 3) \in (\mathbb{C}^*)^ 3\): there exists a nontrivial solution \(\psi : \mathbb{Z}^ 3 \to \mathbb{C}\}\) is called the Fermi hypersurface for the discrete spectral problem. For the case where \(V\) is constant the author constructs a compactification \((F_ \lambda)_{\text{comp}}\) of \(F_ \lambda\) such that the generic points of \((F_ \lambda)_{\text{comp}}\) are smooth points of \((F_ \lambda)_{\text{comp}}\). Similar compactifications in the two- dimensional case have also been carried out by the author. For a review of results in the latter case see a paper by \textit{C. Peters} [Astérisque 189-190, Exp. No. 723, 239-258 (1990; Zbl 0749.14027)].
