A smoothing property \((S_{\Omega })_t\) for Fréchet spaces is introduced generalizing the concept of smoothing operators. It is shown that for Fréchet-Hilbert spaces the property \((\Omega )\) implies property \((S_{\Omega })_t.\) The smoothing property \((S_{\Omega })_t\) leads to decompositions of the form \(x=S_{\theta }x + (x-S_{\theta }x)\) which are closely related to the classical estimates of smoothing operators. The spaces \(C^\infty(\Omega )\) for an open set \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N\) and the spaces \(\mathcal E (K)\) of \(C^\infty\)-functions on \(K\) in the sense of Whitney for an arbitrary compact set \(K\subset \mathbb{R}^N\) satisfy condition \((S_{\Omega })_t.\)
