The paper is concerned with twisted generalized complex structures \(\mathcal{J}\) on 4-dimensional manifolds. In that case, at any point the structure can have type number \(0\) or \(2\). Let \(\kappa(\mathcal{J})\) denote the number of connected components of the subset of \(M\) on which the type number changes. The main result (Theorem 3.1) is that applying a non-trivial logarithmic transformation to \((M,\mathcal{J})\) along a symplectic torus, one obtains a new twisted generalized manifold \((M',\mathcal{J}')\) for which \(\kappa(\mathcal{J}')=\kappa(\mathcal{J}) +1\). Given a 4-manifold and an embedded 2-torus with trivial normal bundle, a logarithmic transformation consists of removing the (unit) normal bundle of the torus and gluing it back by an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of its boundary, which is a 3-torus. The last section of the paper displays various classes of examples. This includes the existence of generalized complex structures with arbitrary large \(\kappa(\mathcal{J})\) on certain connected sums of \(\mathbb{C}P^2\)'s, extending a result of Cavalcanti-Gualtieri. An analogous result is proven for \(S^1\times S^3\).
