Results of the second author [Orthogonal polynomials: theory and practice, Proc. NATO ASI, Columbus/OH (USA) 1989, NATO ASI Ser., Ser. C 294, 435--462 (1990; Zbl 0697.42023); Theorems 6,12] on approximation of the weight functions for orthogonal polynomials on an interval are generalized for the case of several closed or open orthogonality intervals. Particularly, the weight function for these orthogonal polynomials is approximated by some modification of the function \(\psi_n(x)\) (loc. cit., p. 445) with assistance of \(T\)-polynomials of degree \(N\) on \(N\) intervals [cf. \textit{F. Peherstorfer}, J. Approx. Theory 64, No. 2, 123--161 (1991; Zbl 0721.42017)]. The asymptotic behaviour of the orthogonal polynomials \(p_n(x)\) satisfying a three term recurrence formula with asymptotically periodic recurrence coefficients \(\{a_n,b_n: n\in\mathbb{N}\}\) of bounded variation (modulo \(N\)) is studied. Also an estimation of the weight function approximation by so-called `shifted Turán determinants' \[ D_n(x;N) = p_n(x)p_{n-N+1}(x)- \frac{a_{n+1}}{a_{n-N+1}} p_{n+1}(x) p_{n-N}(x) \] is obtained. Numerical examples are given. Remark: There are no references to the original work on asymptotic behaviour of the orthogonal polynomials on several intervals, namely the papers of \textit{N. I. Akhiezer} and \textit{Yu. Ya. Tomchuk} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 138, 743--746 (1961; Zbl 0109.29602)] and \textit{Yu. Ya. Tomchuk} [``Orthogonal polynomials on a system of intervals of the real line'', Uch., Zap. Khar'kov. Gos. Univ. 135, Zap. Mekh.-Mat. Fak. i Mat. Obshch., Ser. 4, 29, 87--100 (1963)].
