Let \(R\) be a ring and let \(X\) be a set of central indeterminates. The type of problem considered is the following: If the classical left quotient ring of \(R[X]\) exists and is left or right self-injective, does the left quotient ring of \(R\) exist and satisfy the corresponding property? In this connection it is very useful to know that \(R\) satisfies the ascending chain condition for right annihilators, and this is established when either (a) the left quotient ring of \(R[X]\) exists and is right self-injective, or (b) \(X\) is infinite and the right quotient ring of \(R[X]\) exists and is right self-injective. It is then shown for instance that if the left quotient ring of \(R[X]\) exists and is right and left self-injective for some non-empty set \(X\), then for any set \(X\) the left quotient ring of \(R[X]\) exists and is QF. It is also shown that if \(R\) is commutative or right non-singular and \(X\) is non-empty, then \(R[X]\) is right FPF if and only if \(X\) consists of a single indeterminate and \(R\) is semi-simple Artinian; in particular, the class of commutative FPF rings is not closed under taking polynomial extensions.
