The paper addresses two main problems concerning the Born rule -- which enables the free energy of a crystalline body as a function of lattice vectors \({\mathbf e}_ a\), in its deformed configuration, and temperature \(\theta\) to be expressed alternatively as a function of the deformation gradient \(\mathbf F\) and \(\theta\) -- and continuum theories of crystallography. They are these: (i) In which cases of crystallography can the Born rule apply? (ii) Can a purely continuum theory of crystal elasticity be developed independently of the Born hypothesis or rule to allow for violations of this rule? The rule cannot always apply where twinning deformations occur. The main conclusion is that an elastic model of a crystalline material can be formulated only when the Born rule applies. Explicit conditions for its validity are given.
