In this paper we study compactification of \(\mathbb{C}^ 2 \times \mathbb{C}^*\), i.e. pairs \((X,Y)\) with a (mostly projective) manifold \(X\) and a closed analytical subset \(Y\) such that \(X \backslash Y\) is biholomorphic (resp. biregular in the algebraic case) to \(\mathbb{C}^ 2 \times \mathbb{C}^*\). This is to be seen as a generalization of compactifications of \(\mathbb{C}^ 3\) which have been investigated by Furushima, Peternell and others. Suppose \(X\) to be projective with \(b_ 2 (X) = 1\). Then \(X\) is automatically Fano, and \(Y\) is a divisor with 2 irreducible components. On the other hand we show that, contrary to the \(\mathbb{C}^ 3\)-case, every rational Fano 3-fold \(V\) with \(b_ 2 (V) = 1\) and index greater than one already compactifies \(\mathbb{C}^ 2 \times \mathbb{C}^*\). Concerning the Fano manifolds of index one, a sufficient condition for compactifying \(\mathbb{C}^ 2 \times \mathbb{C}^*\) can be proven for two types of rational Fano 3-folds that do not compactify \(\mathbb{C}^ 3\). We give a construction to see that these compactifications really do occur. As a byproduct we obtain a characterization of the pair \((\mathbb{P}^ 3, \mathbb{P}^ 2 \cup \mathbb{P}^ 2)\).
