Let \(K\) be an algebraic number field of degree \(n\), and let \(\lambda\) be a Hecke Grössencharacter for \(K\). Then for a principal ideal \((\alpha)\), we may decompose \(\lambda((\alpha))(N\alpha)^{-it}\) as \(\chi(\alpha)v (\alpha)\mu(\alpha)(N\alpha)^{-it}\), where \(\chi\) is a multiplicative character to modulus \(f\), say, \(v\) is a sign character, and \(\mu(\alpha)(N\alpha)^{-it}\) is a `Grössencharacter for numbers', measured by \(g\), say (so that \(g=2+|t|\) if \(\mu\) is trivial). For any \(\varepsilon>0\), and any ideal divisor \(f_0\) of \(f\), it is shown that the Hecke zeta-function satisfies \[ \zeta(\textstyle{{1\over 2}}+ it,\lambda)\ll_{K,\varepsilon}(gNf)^{1/6+ \varepsilon}+ (Nf_0)^{1/2+ \varepsilon}+ (Nf/f_0)^{1/4+ \varepsilon}. \] This may be viewed as a generalization of the corresponding result for Dirichlet \(L\)-functions, due to the reviewer [\textit{D. R. Heath-Brown}, Invent. Math. 47, 149-170 (1978; Zbl 0383.10024)]. Moreover, when \(\lambda\) is trivial one recovers the bound \[ \zeta_K(\textstyle{{1\over 2}}+ it)\ll_{K,\varepsilon}(2+|t|)^{n/6+ \varepsilon} \] for the Dedekind zeta-function. The proof is a hybrid of the work cited above with the reviewer's treatment [Acta Arith. 49, 323-339 (1988; Zbl 0583.12011)] of the Dedekind zeta-function.
