The author constructs a general recursion formula for the Gaunt coefficient \[ a(m,n,\mu,\nu,p)= {(2p+1)\over 2} {(p- m-\mu)!\over (p+m+\mu)!} \int^1_{-1} P^m_n(x) P^\mu_\nu(x) P^{m+\mu}_p(x)dx, \] where \(m\), \(n\), \(\mu\), \(\nu\), \(p\) are integers, \(n\geq 0\), \(\nu\geq 0\), and \(P^m_n\) represents the associated Legendre function of the first kind with degree \(n\) and order \(m\). It is demonstrated that this recursion formula permits fast and precise evaluation of Gaunt coefficients.
