This is the joint review for this and the authors' earlier paper [ibid. 101, 31-39 (1999; Zbl 0952.93078)]. To approximately 50\% both papers coincide -- almost word for word. Their common problem is the approximation of nonlinear control problems for continuous-time dynamic systems via fuzzy controllers. Basic assumption is that some type of system dynamics is known given by a suitable kind of differential equation. Additionally the authors assume that the unknown functions in these differential equations can be estimated by known ones. The papers differ in the type of system dynamics they consider. In both papers, however, the main points are the construction of a sliding-mode adaptive fuzzy controller (which also is of the same kind in both papers) together with proofs of its stability and its convergence.
