For a \(2\pi\)-periodic function \(F\) it is classically known that \[ E_n(F)_p = O(n^{-r}) \text{ if and only if } \omega (F,\delta)_p = O(\delta^r), \] where \(0<r<1, E_n(F)_p\) is the \(L_p\) distance from \(F\) to the trigonometric polynomials of degree less then \(n\), and where \( \omega (F,\delta)_p\) is the modulus of continuity of \(F\) with respect to the \(L_p\) metric. There is no analogous theorem relating the ordinary modulus of continuity of a non-periodic function \(F\), and the order of approximation from the algebraic polynomials. However, the author shows here that there is an analogous theorem using a generalized modulus of continuity. The delicate argument presented, uses a generalized shift operator whose Fourier-Jacobi series is non-symmetric.
