A standard method of stabilization is used, based on the well-known work of Bode. It consists of inserting a linear lumped-element network into the feedback loop. It is assumed that the system is described by a rational transfer function \(H(s)\) followed by a constant delay \(\exp(-hs)\), \(s\) being the usual complex frequency \((s=\alpha +i\omega)\). If the roots of the corresponding characteristic equations \(s_m\) do not satisfy all \(Re(s_m)<0\), then the insertion of the `controller' will modify the new characteristic equation to assure stability. Since parameters are (by definition, and by a realistic consideration) imprecisely known, the obvious method of pole-zero cancellation is excluded.
