From the author's abstract and introduction: ``We prove in this paper the existence of a Schauder basis for \(C[0,1]\) consisting of rational functions of uniformly bounded degrees. This solves an open question of some years standing concerning the possible existence of such bases. The techniques we develop in this paper can actually be applied in a quite general setting and to a variety of function spaces. Our technique will give a new method for constructing bases that are unconditional for \(L_{p}(1<p<\infty),\) Besov, and other spaces and Schauder bases for \(C[0,1]\). Our idea for constructing bases stems from the well known idea of a small perturbation argument: Given a basis \(\{\psi_{j}\} ^{\infty}_{j=1}\) for some Banach space \(X,\) if the functions \(\theta_{j}\) approximate \(\psi_{j}\) well enough, then \(\{\theta_{j}\}_{j=1}^{\infty }\) will also be a basis for \(X\). ``Our main application of this new small perturbation technique is the construction of bases consisting of functions that are linear combinations of a fixed (small) number of shifts and dilates of a single function \(\Phi\). This function ought to be smooth enough and with sufficiently rapid decay.'' Another important motivation for our work in constructing bases is nonlinear approximation. It has been well understood in approximation theory that unconditional bases for \(L_{p}(1<p<\infty)\), Besov, and other spaces provide a simple and powerful tool for nonlinear approximation.'' This extensive paper represents an important contributions to the theory of Schauder basis for function spaces. The proofs and the constructions of new bases are presented using same special statements proved in an appendix.
