A characterization of those Hermitian matrices which are majorized by the sum of finitely many Hermitian matrices with prescribed eigenvalues is proved. This characterization in particular implies Klyachko's theorem. It is then generalized to the case of compact nonnegative operators in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. As a simple corollary of this result, the author obtains an infinite-dimensional version of Klyachko's theorem which gives necessary and sufficient conditions on the eigenvalues of a nonnegative trace-class operator to be the sum of finitely many nonnegative compact operators of trace class with given eigenvalue sequences.
