The paper is concerned with multivariate inhomogeneous refinement equations of the form \[ \varphi(x)=\sum_{\alpha\in{\mathbb Z}^s} a(\alpha)\varphi (Mx-\alpha)+g(x),\quad x\in{\mathbb R}^s, \] where \(g\) is a given compactly supported function on \({\mathbb R}^s\), the mask \(a\) is a finitely supported sequence on \({\mathbb Z}^s\), and \(M\) is an isotropic \((s\times s)\)-integer matrix with \(\lim\limits_{n\rightarrow\infty} M^{-n}=0\). Choosing an initial function \(\varphi_0\in W_2^k({\mathbb R}^s)\) with compact support, let \[ \varphi_n(x)=\sum_{\alpha\in{Z}^s} a(\alpha)\varphi_{n-1} (Mx-\alpha) + g(x),\quad x\in{\mathbb R}^s,\;n\in{\mathbb N}. \] The author gives a characterization of the convergence of this cascade algorithm in the Sobolev space in terms of spectral radius of the transition operator \[ T_b v (x):=\sum_{\beta\in{\mathbb Z}^s} b(Mx-\beta) v(\beta),\quad x\in{\mathbb Z}^s,\;v\in \ell_0({\mathbb Z}^s), \] in suitable subspaces of \(\ell_0({\mathbb Z}^s)\), where \(b\) is connected with the mask \(a\) by \(b(\alpha)=\sum_{\beta\in{\mathbb Z}^s} a (\alpha-\beta) \overline{a (-\beta)}.\)
