The paper studies several notions of regularity of subsets of a Banach space that have been introduced by various authors. These notions belong roughly to three categories: (weak) tangential regularity, defined by the condition that the (weak) contingent cone equals the Clarke tangent cone; normal regularity of various kinds (Dini, Fréchet, proximal, Mordukhovich), expressed in terms of equality between two of the various kinds of normal cones to the set; and notions of regularity defined through the regularity of the distance function to the set. The paper examines the relations existing between these notions of regularity, presents new shorter proofs of known results and establishes several new results clarifying the connections between these notions.
