Let \(A\) be an absolutely simple abelian variety defined over a number field~\(K\). For every prime \(v\) of \(K\) of good reduction, we let \(r_v:A(K)\rightarrow A(k_v)\) denote the natural `reduction' map from the Mordell-Weil group \(A(K)\) to the group of points of \(A\) over the residue field~\(k_v\) of~\(v\). The first main result proved by the authors is the following. Let \(P,Q\in A(K)\) be two points of infinite order and suppose that the order of \(r_v(Q)\) divides the order of \(r_v(P)\) for almost all primes \(v\) of \(K\). Then there exists a \(K\)-endomorphism \(f\) of~\(A\) for which \(Q=f(P)\). This theorem extends and complements results by \textit{C. Corrales} and \textit{R. Schoof} [J. Number Theory 64, 276--290 (1997; Zbl 0922.11086)] and \textit{M.~Larsen}, [J. Number Theory 101, 398--403 (2003; Zbl 1039.11040)]. The second main theorem proved by the authors is the following. Let \(A\) be an absolutely simple abelian variety defined over a number field~\(K\). Suppose that \(\varphi:A(K)\rightarrow A(K)\) is a group homomorphism with the property that for almost all primes~\(v\) of~\(K\), there exist group homomorphisms \(\phi_v:A(k_v)\rightarrow A(k_v)\) for which~\(\phi_vr_v=r_v\varphi\). Then there is a subgroup \(H\) of finite index of \(A(K)\) and an \(K\)-endomorphism \(f\) of the abelian variety \(A\) that induces the restriction of \(\varphi\) to~\(H\). An important ingredient in the proofs of both results is a theorem of \textit{F. Bogomolov} exposed in [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 290, 701--703 (1980; Zbl 0457.14020)].
