    Der Satz des Pythagoras tritt im Alten Orient in der Regel in Gestalt von Problemen um einen an eine Wand gelehnten Stab auf, bei denen der Abstand des Stabendes von der Wand, die Stablänge oder die Absenkung der Stabspitze aus den anderen Angaben zu ermitteln sind. Der Verf. analysiert die Lösungsverfahren in den überlieferten Keilschrifttexten aus der altbabylonischen und aus der Seleukidenzeit sowie in demotischen Texten aus dem ptolemäischen Ägypten.
