This paper investigates the monotonicity of the period function with increasing amplitude of centres of planar differential systems. The method of proof uses an extension of Lie brackets. A large number of examples illustrate the theory: there are particular applications to Hamiltonian systems, the Lotka-Volterra equations and Liénard systems.
