The present paper is devoted to the proof of a Paley-Wiener type theorem, i.e., to the description of the image, under the \(\Theta\)-hypergeometric transform, of (invariant) compactly supported functions. The \(\Theta\)-hypergeometric transform provides a unified approach to several generalizations of harmonic analysis on Riemannian symmetric spaces such as the Heckman-Opdam theory and harmonic analysis on noncompactly causal symmetric spaces. Inspired by Heckman and Opdam's theory, the \(\Theta\)-hypergeometric transform depends on an Euclidean space \(\mathtt a\), a root system \(\Sigma\) on \({\mathtt a}^*\), a multiplicity function \(m\colon \Sigma\to {\mathbb C}\), and a subset \(\Theta\) of the set \(\Pi\) of positive simple roots of \(\Sigma\). When \(\Theta=\Pi\) the transform coincides with Opdam's transform. The authors prove the Paley-Wiener theorem for the \(\Theta\)-spherical transform when the multiplicity function takes nonnegative even values, provided that either \(m(\alpha)\leq2\) for every root \(\alpha\) in \(\Sigma^+\setminus\langle\Theta\rangle^+\) or that \(\Pi\setminus\Theta=\{\beta\}\) and \(\langle\beta,\alpha\rangle\geq0\) for all \(\alpha\in\Sigma^+\setminus\langle\Theta\rangle^+\) (Condition A). All pairs \((\Theta, m)\) corresponding to \(K_\varepsilon\) symmetric spaces with even multiplicities satisfy Condition A, so this condition applies to all geometrical situations in which the theory of \(\Theta\)-hypergeometric functions might be relevant.
