For a compact Riemannian manifold \(M\), without boundary, the author proves that the \(p\)-th square root of the first nonzero eigenvalue of the \(p\)-Laplacian converges (for \(p \rightarrow \infty\)) to 2 over the diameter of \(M\). The result is applied to the case of compact hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space, where optimal lower bounds for the diameter are obtained, in terms of the largest principal curvature.
