This is the first of two papers dealing with aspects of a certain 2- generator infinite 3-group G defined by the author and N. D. Gupta as a group of automorphisms of an infinite tree. The presentation problem for G is discussed. It is shown that G is not finitely presentable and details are given - too involved to outline here - of a recursive presentation for G.
