The authors construct, for each prime \(p\), a 2-generator infinite \(p\)-group \(E\) containing a copy of every finite \(p\)-group. In the case where \(p\) is odd, all proper quotients of \(E\) are finite. The general strategy -- employed to good effect by the authors in previous papers -- is to begin with a group \(G\) and consider an infinite tree \(T\) whose vertices are the elements of the monoid freely generated by the underlying set of \(G\). Then the group \(A\) of automorphisms of \(T\) contains a copy of \(G\), and so the construction of interesting supergroups of \(G\) as subgroups of \(A\) is made simple. In the present paper the desired group \(E\) is obtained by taking \(G\) cyclic of order \(p\) or 4 and adjoining to \(G\) a suitable element of \(A\). The authors refer to a previous paper (listed as ``to appear, 1983'') outlining more details of the technique, but the reviewer was unable to locate it.
