The effects of overflow and quantization nonlinearities on the performance of orthogonal biquad recursive digital filters (OBRDF) are investigated. These filters are now widely used in commercial digital transmultiplexers. So far the effects of the two nonlinearities have been investigated separately, but here the treatment is carried out in the presence of both of them. A properly chosen example shows an unexpected dependence between these effects so that, generally speaking, their separation is not permissible. Finally, two theorems insuring necessary and sufficient conditions for overflow stability in the presence of quantization are given.
