The rings considered here are associative but do not necessarily have an identity element. The author considers situations where a chain condition on right ideals implies the corresponding condition for left ideals. He shows that a right Artinian ring is left Artinian if and only if J/(J \(2+D)\) is a finitely-generated left module, where J is the Jacobson radical and D is the maximal divisible torsion ideal. There is also a version for rings without identity element of Lenagan's theorem that an ideal of finite left length in a right Noetherian ring also has finite right length.
