This survey is divided in four parts. The central theme is that group- algebraic methods yield systems of nonlinear partial differential equations, and solutions thereof. The first section is devoted to exactly integrable systems. Starting with a finite-dimensional graded Lie algebra, the zero-curvature equation is considered. Treated examples are certain finite Toda lattices. Extensions to supersymmetric systems are considered. The second section shows how to apply the first section to the embedding problem of differential geometry. The third section discusses completely integrable systems (soliton systems). Here the underlying Lie algebra contains a spectral parameter. As examples the sine-Gordon and KdV-equation are treated. The last section deals with 4- dimensional self-dual equations. Using 2-dimensionalized versions, solutions are obtained.
