This paper compares a multigrid mthod with several preconditioned conjugate gradient methods for some sample boundary-value problems for the diffusion equation \(-(au_ x)_ x-(bu_ y)_ y=f\) on the unit square. The sample problems involve sources and sinks, as well as anisotropy of the flow. The schemes are implemented on a CYBER 205 computer. The authors conclude that the multigrid method is much more efficient, particularly on large problems.
