Harmonic analysis on the real Heisenberg nilpotent Lie group \(Heis_ n={\mathbb{C}}^ n\times {\mathbb{R}}\) with group law given by the prescription \[ (w,z).(w',z')=(w+w',z+z'-(1/2)Im(w.\bar w')) \] admits a variety of different aspects. The central result of the representational approach, see the monograph [\textit{W. Schempp}: Harmonic analysis on the Heisenberg nilpotent Lie group, with applications to signal theory. (Pitman Res. Notes Math. 147, 1986; Zbl 0632.43001)], is formed by the Stone-von Neumann uniqueness theorem and its geometric visualization by the planar coadjoint orbits of \(Heis_ n\) in the real dual of the \((2n+1)\)- dimensional Heisenberg Lie algebra as a stack of data pages of a layered holographic associative memory. The paper under review deals with the joint spectral theory of the Heisenberg Laplacian \(\square\) and the differential operator \(\partial /\partial z\) acting along the center of \(Heis_ n\). The spectral decomposition in \(L^ 2\) is given explicitly in terms of Laguerre polynomials of order n-1. The main result is a summability theorem for the spectral decomposition valid in \(L^ p\) for \(1<p<\infty\). The cases \(p=1\) and \(p=\infty\) need special considerations. The Heisenberg Radon transform is shown to be bounded from \(L^ p\) to \(L^ q\) if and only if the exponents satisfy the conditions \(p=(2n+2)/(2n+1)\), \(q=2n+2\). For different applications of harmonic analysis on the Lie group \(Heis_ 1\) see [\textit{W. Schempp}: Result Math. 16, 345-382 (1989; Zbl 0686.68007)], and the forthcoming paper [\textit{W. Schempp}: Bohr's indeterminacy principle in quantum holography, self-adaptive neural networks, cortical self-organization, molecular computers, magnetic resonance imaging, and solitonic manotechnology (in print)].
